How To Get Started
You want to play hockey! That is excellent news. We can’t wait to meet you and see you skating on the ice with us. A couple of details about the organization can be found on our About page.
Metro Milwaukee Women’s Hockey offers women of all skill levels (novice to advanced) a chance to experience the great game of ice hockey.
We welcome players with all levels of hockey experience. We have limited equipment available to outfit novices who want to try the sport before committing to it. Potential members may attend their first practice at no cost. Please contact us for more details.
Clinics:
We offer Spring and Fall skills clinics that are open to all levels of experience. Clinics usually include brief review on skating technique, lots of puck handling, shooting, passing drills along with some positioning. They are ran by qualified Instructors, along with shooters for the goalies. Clinics are divided into two groups allowing the beginners more room to focus on the fundamentals and the more advanced skaters to focus their training on a variety of drills. Check our calendar for upcoming clinic dates.
Summer House League:
Consisting of 5-6 teams and skating May thru August at the Pettit National Ice Center. All levels are welcome and encouraged to play. Teams are chosen and have equal skill levels to ensure fun for all. Summer is recreational and not highly competitive. It was created for the individual to work on their own skills within a game atmosphere, to try new things, to learn from others, to make new friends, and most of all just to have fun.
Competitive Senior Travel Teams:
We have 3 competitive senior level teams, known as the Brew City Blades, competing in the WCHL (Womens Central Hockey League) [link to www.eteamz.com/wchl]. These teams have traveled throughout WI, IL, and MN and have participated in tournaments as far as Florida. Qualified coaching staff, scheduled practices, league and exhibition games, and weekend tournaments are part of the fun. Evaluations and try-outs are held annually at the end of the Summer House League season. If you are interested in learning more, view our calendar for evaluation dates, or contact us for details.
Open Practices:
We offer women the opportunity to skate with our Senior Travel Teams in practices. Financial commitment must be made upfront for these practices. It’s a great way for women to stay active on the ice in the winter season. Please contact us for more information about Open Practices.
You are more than welcome to come visit a practice to see what the team is all about, just make sure you dress warm! Please see our schedules for Open team practice times. Looking forward to seeing you on the ice!!
Skating Schools:
If you are a beginner skater, area rinks offer learn to skate and learn to play hockey programs. If you are interested in these programs, please contact the rinks directly.
Please Contact Us:
We want you to feel welcome on the ice and in the locker room. Let us know you're coming and we'll be sure to look for you and introduce you to everyone. Please email Sue Mishler (suemishler@yahoo.com)
What to Bring/ Need Stuff:
We highly recommend bringing a water bottle while skating. Besides that, we practice in full gear:
- Skates
- Shin guards
- Breezers (pants)
- Elbow pads
- Shoulder pads
- Gloves
- Helmet
- Stick
- Jersey
- Socks
If you are new to this sport, you might not have everything. NO PROBLEM. Contact Sue Mishler suemishler@yahoo.com and she will bring extra gear for you to borrow.
What to expect:
Most players arrive about 30 minutes early. Some of us are slow dressers and some of us are big talkers- either way, we need the time! The locker room assignments at Pettit are listed on the wall on a clip board across from the skate rental downstairs. Other rinks are usually listed near the concession stand
Cost:
As much as we all love hockey, we regret we must charge for this fun. The good news, though, is your very first practice is FREE! After that, we must pay the bills…
